Your name, and your bird’s name if you like, will be listed as Guardian Angels on our Website Memorial Wall.
The Pickle Memorial Fund directly supports the mission of the Santa Barbara Bird Sanctuary. Please see our donation form for more information on how to participate and memorialize your feathered angels. Your donation will be used to house, feed, rehabilitate and support the permanent residents and birds available for adoption in the Sanctuary. Please come and visit the flock and the Pickle Memorial Fund Wall during Sanctuary visiting hours when you are in the Summerland area.
History of the Pickle Memorial Fund
The Pickle Memorial Fund was founded in 2012 by Judge Joe Brown and his wife Deborah, long time friends of the Sanctuary. For several years they had been coming by for visits and to get supplies for their fallow green-cheeked conure, Pickle. In early 2012 they stopped by and with tears in their eyes, they related that Pickle had departed this world in a freak accident when his cage was knocked over. They graciously offered a donation and a framed photo of Pickle and let us know they wanted to start a fund in Pickle’s name that would benefit our flock in his memory. When you visit the Sanctuary be sure to look for Pickle’s tile on the Memorial Wall. Through Pickle and the warm generosity of Joe and Deborah Brown, the Pickle Memorial Fund was created to honor and benefit all of the birds we love so much.
Judge Joe Brown’s ode to Pickle
I loved you; you always gave me a morale boost and peace for the moment.
I can still feel you scampering and snuggling; I gladly confess that I felt closer to you than to any other.
I miss you so much; thank you my dear little girl for the short time we were able to be together.
You let my spirit fly with yours; yours will always be with mine.
Judge Joe Brown’s words to his new friend Pepper
PEPPER, that’ll be your name! There’s a vast void that I need to fill; a hole in my soul full of pain and loss. It is my hope that the spirit of our dear, sweet little PICKLE will grace us again by flying with you.
